Liverpool Lacking Goals

Image
Sadly it was the same old story for the Reds as they struggled to turn possession and control of the game into goals and more importantly a win. Anzhi utilised their big man up front Traore and took a lead which lasted the whole game at the stroke of half time, Liverpool just couldn't find a return.

Brendan Rodgers had fielded a weakened side with one eye still on Sunday's tie with Chelsea but the familiar faces of Carragher, Shelvey and Henderson were present. Anzhi had all their big names on with Eto'o captaining the side.

Liverpool began the game well (which I'm sick to death of saying) and appeared to be handling the more active attack of Anzhi. Chances were few and far between but at least to start with the Reds were keeping out Hiddink's sides attempts too.

The first real opportunity for Liverpool fell to the out of favour Jordan Henderson and I must admit it's clear his confidence is very low. He was one on one with a keeper who had gone to ground and c…

Reds In Russia

Image
Liverpool are in Moscow on Thursday evening to face Anzhi. The Russian side rose to fame after being taken over by a millionaire but they are aiming to be remembered for more than just their megabucks as they look to get the better of the Reds in the Europa League.

Brendan Rodgers has left several star players at home for this match, obviously wary of the looming tie with Chelsea on Sunday. Whilst the likes of Gerrard and Suarez plus several others have been left out, there are some less used youngsters like Morgan and Coady on the list.

Liverpool are currently in a comfortable position at the top of the group but with Anzhi playing this fixture in the potentially daunting Lokomotiv Stadium (home of Lokomotiv Moscow) there could be a stumbling block on the cards.

Anzhi as we saw at Anfield have some very familiar names in their side with Eto'o and Zhirkov etc but a cautious approach away from home enabled Liverpool to take full advantage. I would assume in Moscow they will be mor…

Downing Strike Seals Comfortable Win For Reds

Brendan Rodgers went for a very strong XI against Guus Hiddink's Anzhi on Thursday night after many expected a weakened side. The only real fringe players were Brad Jones in goal and Stewart Downing who would end up proving he still has at least something left in his locker.

Anzhi's megabucks line up consisted of Samba, Zhirkov and Eto'o but it was evident from the whistle that the Russian's plans were to get the ball to the latter and hope for the best.

Liverpool started confidently and were strong in keeping the ball. Possession is obviously very close to Brendan's heart and I think the majority of Thursday evenings performance backed up that mentality. Game stats did finish at exactly 50/50 in possession though.

The Reds first real chance fell to Jonjo Shelvey but he couldn't quite convert his effort into a lead for Liverpool. It was safe to say from the tone set though that the Anzhi keeper would have a lot coming his way throughout this 90 minutes.

Anzhi At Anfield

Image
The Russians with the rubles travel to Anfield on Thursday night as Guus Hiddink's Anzhi face Liverpool in the Europa League. The two sides have never met before and although Anzhi are well known in the media it's still guess work for many as to what they are like on the pitch.

Brendan Rodgers still has long term injuries to worry about with Borini, Kelly and Lucas but the boss might opt to field a slighty different team in this Europa League tie. The youngsters have been fantastic and I get the feeling he will probably start most of them alongside players like Downing and Henderson who are now very much on the fringe.

In their last five games in all competitions Anzhi haven't lost. They have also managed to bag two goals in each of their last 4 games. In terms of their performances in the Group this year they confidently beat Young Boys at home and picked up a draw in Udinese.

Anzhi's squad has some massive names within it including Eto'o and Lassana Diarra, thei…
