Past Players: Volume 8 - Ian Callaghan

Ian Callaghan is a player stamped into Anfield folklore after recording a massive 857 appearances for the club. Callaghan who was born in Toxteth in April 1942 was a versatile midfielder who began his career at Liverpool on the right wing and eventually ended up in the centre.

Callaghan is a name you learn as a Liverpool fan no matter what age you are sucked into the club but it is the older generation who had the privalege to experience his ability and charm first hand.

Whenever somebody utters the name of Liverpool Football Club, it's synonymous with great managers and great players. Over the years Bill Shankly has become an icon but many people forget the achievements of his successor, Shankly began the dream, but it was none other than Bob Paisley who ensured it continued.

Playing Career

Bob Paisley began his footballing career at Bishop Auckland a none league side close to Durham. Bob made his move to Liverpool in 1939 but because of World War 2 he was unable to make his debut until the beginning of January in 1946.

His first goal came against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a league fixture at Anfield. As a defender, Bob wasn't a huge goalscorer but managed to put 10 in the net over 253 appearances for Liverpool.
