Liverpool V Trabzonspor

Here is hoping Agger gets his memory back soon, might be embarrassing if he calls Roy, Rafa...
Daniel Agger and Javier Mascherano will not be featuring in Liverpool's game tomorrow against Trabzonspor. Agger seems to have totally forgotten he even played a football match on Sunday and is still suffering from concussion whereas Mascherano has picked up a calf injury.
Roy's selection will therefore be slightly different to Sunday's team fielded against Arsenal but will presumably still include the big names i.e. Torres, Gerrard and co.
So what about the opposition? Well some of you older lot will remember a clash with the Turkish side in the European Cup in 1976. The first leg Liverpool trailed 1-0 but won their home leg 3-0 to see the Reds through.
What else do we know Trabzonspor then?
Well, it's no coincidence that they hail from the Turkish town of Trabzon. They were formed in 1967 when several football clubs in Trabzon merged together.
They play in dark red and blue hence…

Anfield Opens Its Doors For The Competitive Season

Can Joe Cole impress in his first Anfield appearance?...
Liverpool play their first match of the season at Anfield tonight as they look to secure a place in the next round of the Europa League after this 2nd leg against Macedonian side Rabotnicki.
After the superb news earlier in the week that star striker and adopted Spaniard Fernando Torres will remain at the club, unfortunately the number 9 will not be featuring tonight due to his very late on injury he picked up in Spain's win in the world cup final.
Other players who probably won't be utilised include misfit Philip Degen who has been told he can find a new club and out of place Javier Mascherano who has told Hodgson he wishes to leave the club. Despite this Hodgson remains adamant that he is treating the midfielder still as a Liverpool player so you never know, we may just see the Argentine.
With Pepe Reina, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel recently back in training after their extended breaks we could probably see all three of those…

We Have Never Lost To The Latics

The big Greek has served his ban, could he be back to face Wigan?
In the Premier League we have always walked away with a bare minimum of at least 1 point when facing Wigan, and tomorrow is no time to change that fact.
Wigan are a rather funny footballing side, at the moment they are not going too well when it comes to winning games either. Their last recorded win was at Molineux against Wolves where they won the game 2-0. This result came in the latter half of Januray and although Wigan have mustered some draws and perhaps been unlucky in some fixtures, they are still in the midst of a struggle.
However, in my eyes, Wigan are exactly one of those sides that can prove to be a stumbling block for Liverpool. Just like Portsmouth, it is always the sides many people feel confident we can beat that i fear most. Perhaps this is because when you play a side like Wigan, the automatic expectation adds a lot of pressure and although this should not affect the players i think in some senses it can ge…

"We Prefer To Talk On The Pitch."

I didn't realise Allardyce was German...
Was easily my Rafa Benitez quote of the day for yesterday. There is nothing more satisfying as a manager of a winning side, and nothing more dissatisfying as a manager of the losing side, when as the loser you come out before hand, running off things such as Liverpool are fatigued, they have been "digging games out" etc in an attempt to dislodge the victory train.
As Benitez's quote suggests though, it was the manager on the winning side that had the last laugh. The tension between our Gaffa and Big Sam is continually growing and I'm afraid the ex Bolton manager is simply no match for our rather clever and brilliantly subtle sarcastic Spaniard.
With Skrtel out through injury, there was an open space left in the back four. Mascherano was somewhat surprisingly chosen at right back, although we have witnessed him have a successful stint here earlier in the season when a sending off shook up the formation.
Aurelio had started at …

Wonder Strike Leads The Way For Reds Romanian Victory

Mascherano nets Liverpool's first goal...
Javier Mascherano, Ryan Babel and Steven Gerrard all found the back of the net yesterday evening in Bucharest, after going down 1-0 to the home side when Fernandes scored in the first half, Liverpool managed to complete a very successful turn around.
A strong team was fielded by Rafa, although Torres was left out, perhaps for precautionary reasons. Benayoun however did start along with Ryan Babel on the other wing. Kuyt had been left on the bench and Kyrgiakos was not opted to start.
Up until the Urziceni goal Liverpool were looking rather ineffective, the Romanians were pushing forward, gaining corners and free kicks and looking quite dangerous whereas our only moment of credit was a Steven Gerrard drive which was saved by second fiddle Lithuanian goalkeeper - Arlauskis.
The goal came from a corner for the Romanians, a leaping and in space Fernandes sent the ball past Reina leaving the defence bemused.
There was nobody anywhere near Fernandes…
