Hat Trick For Suarez In Wigan Win

A well-oiled Liverpool side put 4 past Roberto Martinez's Wigan on Saturday and took all 3 points from the DW. Stewart Downing headed home Liverpool's first making it only his second league goal for the Reds and Luis Suarez was left to work his magic scoring a hat trick in great style.

There was no Daniel Sturridge for the Reds and once again Jamie Carragher was preferred in defence to the out of favour Martin Skrtel. Looking back after the result it makes you realise that there could have been even more goals because Sturridge would have surely found the back of the net in that game, we're in a comfortable position for a change when it comes to attack.

It only took the Reds a couple of minutes to get off the mark and it was Phillipe Coutinho impressing the masses. Some lovely skill from the ex Inter Milan player allowed him to play in a lovely cross to an awaiting Stewart Downing, the presented header was too easy to miss and Liverpool were 1-0 up.

Liverpool's second…

Improved Wigan Welcome Reds

After a short break the Reds are back in business on Saturday against Wigan at the DW. The last time Liverpool were playing in the league they emphatically put 5 past Swansea but with a gap in their momentum can they pull off a similar performance against Wigan away?

Liverpool's only real injury worry for this clash is with Daniel Sturridge who will be subject to a late fitness test. Fabio Borini and Martin Kelly are also still out long term. For Wigan they have no new injury worries but Ryo Miyaichi is still out.

The last time the two sides met in the league was in November last year. Liverpool kept a clean sheet in that game and put 3 past Wigan with Luis Suarez scoring twice and Jose Enrique also finding the back of the net. The last time Liverpool were at Wigan though they were unable to find a goal and the gamed ended in a 0-0 draw. Wigan on the whole have been quite resilient at home against the Reds recently. The last meeting before the 0-0 saw Wigan collect and 1-1 draw a…

Enrique Cements Wigan Win

Liverpool managed to buck their ideas up in a second half against Wigan which saw them put three goals past keeper Al Habsi. Enrique cemented the win for the Reds but it was Suarez once again who stole the show with 2 goals and several chances of upping his tally.

Reina was back in the starting XI for Liverpool and it was the three S's leading the attack again with Suso, Sterling and Suarez all starting.

The game began for Liverpool in a similar way to the Chelsea fixture, a reasonably good performance but with no real chances or panache. The positive thing for Liverpool this time though was that no offence to Wigan but they aren't Chelsea and the Reds had also managed to ensure that despite not scoring themselves in the first half, they hadn't conceded either. The first half also saw a substitution with Henderson replacing Suso at 35 minutes.

The second half was in complete contrast to the first and Liverpool stormed off the mark with a goal from everybody's favourit…

Reina Could Face Latics

Liverpool face Wigan this weekend as the Latics make the short trip to Anfield. Steven Gerrard featured for England during international friendlies in the week making his 100th appearance and will captain the side on Saturday.

Some good news for Liverpool this week in terms of injuries as Lucas Leiva has returned to training at Melwood and also Pepe Reina looks as though he may finally be ready to start between the sticks again. Jonjo Shelvey is also available after suffering a small thigh problem.

For Wigan, they have a doubt hanging over James McArthur but long term absentee Miyaichi may be available for Martinez's starting XI.

Wigan are currently perched just below Liverpool in the league in 14th place and a win for them would push Martinez's side above us. Wigan look stronger this season compared to last and after recording a win at White Hart Lane earlier this month they aren't a team the bigger sides should just assume they will beat.

Most fans will also remember Wi…

Wigan Win At Anfield

Liverpool were beaten once again in the league on Saturday after Wigan put two past Reds keeper Pepe Reina. A penalty and a goal from Caldwell gave Wigan a much needed three points as Martinez tries to steer his side away from the drop.

Dalglish introduced young John Flanagan to the line up and it was Luis Suarez alone up front but with some support from Dirk Kuyt on the wing.

A fairly unconvincing first half from Liverpool left them struggling for ideas. Some half chances didn't really supply fans with much hope at Anfield although a shot from Stewart Downing that went wide to the right of goal was nearly enough to change things.

Shortly after though, Liverpool found themselves in trouble. A challenge from Martin Skrtel in the box left referee Lee Mason with an easy decision. Skrtel's foot was far too high and he caught Victor Moses in the face.

Shaun Maloney had to wait a while to take the penalty due to treatment for Moses but the nerves didn't get to him as he put a c…

Wigan Up Next For Out Of Form Reds

Liverpool face Wigan at Anfield on Saturday and after falling to a terrible defeat against Queens Park Rangers in the week, the Reds are desperately after all 3 points. Wigan themselves have more than one reason to be battling for the points as they look to get themselves out of a relegation battle.

Injuries for Liverpool mean they are without Bellamy, Johnson and Agger and also doubtful is Charlie Adam. Martin Kelly picked up a knock against QPR but he is expected to be available on Saturday. For Wigan they are without Rodallega, Jones and their reserve keeper Pollitt.

Liverpool's current form in the league as we all know hasn't been fantastic. 4 losses out of the Reds' last 5 league games leaves them battling for their right to 7th with the likes of Swansea and Sunderland. Wigan's form isn't much better but perhaps consistent with 3 draws in the midst of a win and a loss.

The last time the two sides met, neither of them managed to score and this 0-0 is the first…

No Goals At Wigan

Liverpool left the DW Stadium last night with just the one point after a resilient Wigan would not allow anything past them. The home side also had their fair share of attempts at goal in what was a pretty lively game for a 0-0 draw.

Liverpool started Luis Suarez and i think this was an excellent decision by manager Kenny Dalglish. By not starting him, the conspiracy theories would have been out. It was also nice to see Dalglish and the players fully supporting Suarez in their number 7 shirts.

Maxi Rodriguez also got a start after Craig Bellamy was chosen to start from the bench due to our two recent games being in quick succession.

Liverpool's best portion of the game was easily the first 20 minutes or so. The Reds kept their shape and plenty in the form of attack was being created from both the wings and through the centre of midfield. Luis Suarez was as lively as ever and the link up play between him and Maxi Rodriguez was fantastic.

Al Habsi had a different plan to the sea of…

Liverpool Face Latics At DW

Will Carroll get a start?...
Liverpool make the short trip to the DW Stadium on Wednesday to face a rejuvenated Wigan side. Martinez's team are still hovering around the bottom of the table but some inspired performances of late have given them some much needed confidence. This could be a surprise package for the Reds who on paper would be down for three points by anyone's standards.

Injuries for Liverpool mean that once again Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva are unavailable. Jay Spearing is serving the last of his three match ban and it is believed that Dalglish may rest Welshman Craig Bellamy. With the outcome of the Suarez case being one Liverpool did not expect to hear (club statement) we may also see Suarez left out.

For Wigan, they are expected to be without defender Emmerson Boyce and there is also a doubt over Hugo Rodallega which could be a big blow for Wigan.

Our most recent meeting with Wigan was in February of this year. The match ended in a 1-1 draw for Liverpool wi…

Meireles Scores In Wigan Draw

Raul Meireles scores once again for Liverpool...
A side clearly suffering from fatigue yesterday meant that Liverpool could only muster a draw against Wigan Athletic. With key men Daniel Agger and Steven Gerrard unavailable plus several players only just back from international duty, the match took its toll into the second half and by 90minutes, 1-1 was probably a fair result.

A first half goal from the on fire Raul Meireles saw Liverpool take the lead. A deflected Fabio Aurelio cross eventually found its way out to the number 4 who with a great finish sent the effort into the left of goal and past Wigan keeper Al Habsi.

The linking up of new recruit Luis Suarez and Dirk Kuyt in the first half was perhaps the most prominent thing to note. A strange almost immediate link between the pair meant clever flicks and passes within the oppositions box were a regular occurrence.

Suarez once again put on display his technical ability with the skill and confidence of a player who had been in the …

Incentive For Reds As They Search For 5th Win & 5th Clean Sheet

It will be no surprise if the on fire Raul Meireles scores again tomorrow...
Liverpool are in search of a 5th win on the bounce tomorrow as they welcome Wigan to Anfield. Also on the back of four clean sheets, Dalglish's side will surely be brimming with confidence going into this fixture against a side in 18th place.

With results seeing a major improvement at Liverpool it is very hard to look at this clash and not predict a Liverpool win. With solid defensive displays and clear attacking options, even without using our two new signings, surely 3 points are within our reach tomorrow.

However, it is vital we don't push aside Wigan's valiant efforts in a mad weekend of football last week. A battle with Blackburn saw them eventually take all three points after beating fellow Lancashire neighbours 4-3.

Liverpool have never lost to Wigan at home but despite this strong home record, as recently as March of last season i am sure you will all remember a 1-0 defeat at the hands of W…

A Gold And Black Perspective

So for those of you that don't know by now (where have you been?!) my lovely other half is a massive Wolves fan. Of course with me living in Wolverhampton that's hardly shocking is it? Anyways, as i did last season i have requested that he gives The Liver Bird a taste of how they are feeling on the opposite side in the run up to Wednesday night's clash.
My match preview will be up at some point tomorrow but for the time being enjoy...
One to watch Matt Jarvis...
Wolves head to Anfield on the back of a demoralising home defeat to relegation rivals Wigan Athletic. It certainly spoilt my Boxing Day, though it came as no major surprise.
That defeat probably marks the lowest point of our season. Beaten at home by Wigan and bottom of the league. Not quite bottom at Christmas, but close enough. In truth, it's looking pretty hopeless.
But we are just the sort of team who could pull out a result on Wednesday night. Last season, we were beaten home and away by Portsmouth but did the …

Can We See Off Stoke?

Liverpool drew 1-1 at Stoke last season...
Liverpool travel to the Britannia Stadium tomorrow for an evening clash with Stoke City. After the dismal performance at Wigan, this away trip is again posing questions for Liverpool fans, even with Stoke on such poor form (perhaps some of it can be brushed off as bad luck) i still don't think Liverpool will get anything at all if we set up tactically and play as we did at the DW.
Liverpool seem to have an ever growing injury list, just as somebody gets fit another gets injured. Ryan Babel is suffering from bruised ribs. Meireles came off at half time against Wigan due to sickness. Brad Jones is still injured and so too Daniel Agger. Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Glen Johnson with both have late assessments and rumour has it that Roy will be making a late call on Joe Cole.
Liverpool can still boast being unbeaten in 4 league games but Stoke will be well aware of the Reds lack lustre performance midweek. Stoke themselves have just got their first wi…

Reds Hold On To Draw

Rodallega punished again...
Liverpool just about managed to come away from the DW with a point yesterday, after a promising early start it only got worse for the Reds and with several threats from Wigan, at one stage it looked like we could be staring defeat in the face.
A steady start from Liverpool meant that the Reds could capitalize within the first ten minutes. Showing similarities to the start of the Chelsea game, it was Fernando Torres who again began Liverpool's goalscoring.
A lovely pass from Steven Gerrard meant the number 9 could collect the ball and make a run. Using his strength he battled with the Wigan defender and with another cool finish got himself his third goal in two games.
A top start and a goal already, it was looking fine and dandy for Liverpool who lost here last season and drew the season before. Martinez must have been weary of a Liverpool side who were on the back of three wins in the league but to be fair to Martinez, he and his side never let their guard …

Can We Make It Four Wins On The Bounce?

Reina celebrates after the Reds big win over Chelsea...
Liverpool make the short trip to Wigan this evening for their midweek fixture. After an emphatic win over Chelsea anything seems possible but can Liverpool transfer the skills from beating the champions into skills to grind down lower caliber opposition?
Injuries for Liverpool mean we are still without Joe Cole and Daniel Agger. Brad Jones is also injured and Sotirios Kyrgiakos is still recovering from his bout of tonsillitis.
Fernando Torres simply has to start. Clearly justified from his most recent performance the number 9 would surely benefit from another 90minutes and i for one would bank on him scoring tonight. Defence could be slightly different tonight depending on whether Roy sticks with Kelly or brings Johnson back. Midfield i feel has been working well and it's no coincidence that the performances have been better with the absence of Poulsen.
For Wigan they are without James McCarthy, Steve Gohouri and Emmerson Boyce. …

Martinez Makes Mockery Of Reds

A disappointed Pepe Reina removes his gloves.
Martinez capitalised on the fact that Liverpool are clearly still not set in their ways or on to some sort of consistency. Martinez realised that Liverpool were, and have been a beatable side for a while now providing your tactics are good and the work ethic of your players is at a maximum.
Martinez was right, with an inspired performance from a Wigan side who have not won since late January on the new turf at the DW, Liverpool were made to look undone. Wigan on the other hand resembled a top 4 challenging side whilst the Reds allowed their heads to drop directly after the 35minute Wigan winner found its way into the net.
Benitez fielded an interesting line up, Mascherano was again utilised at right back although Glen Johnson did make his come back as a substitute. The line up had many attacking options with the likes of Gerrrard, Torres, Benayoun, Kuyt and Maxi all making the start. The big Greek was back in defence and it was Reina, Carraghe…

We Have Never Lost To The Latics

The big Greek has served his ban, could he be back to face Wigan?
In the Premier League we have always walked away with a bare minimum of at least 1 point when facing Wigan, and tomorrow is no time to change that fact.
Wigan are a rather funny footballing side, at the moment they are not going too well when it comes to winning games either. Their last recorded win was at Molineux against Wolves where they won the game 2-0. This result came in the latter half of Januray and although Wigan have mustered some draws and perhaps been unlucky in some fixtures, they are still in the midst of a struggle.
However, in my eyes, Wigan are exactly one of those sides that can prove to be a stumbling block for Liverpool. Just like Portsmouth, it is always the sides many people feel confident we can beat that i fear most. Perhaps this is because when you play a side like Wigan, the automatic expectation adds a lot of pressure and although this should not affect the players i think in some senses it can ge…

A Long Needed 3 Points

Liverpool beat Martinez's Wigan yesterday at Anfield and secured a much needed win. The boys managed to put two past ex Liverpool keeper Chris Kirkland although it was still some of the same old story after the lads conceded another very late goal which sort of put a spoil on what could have been a better result.
Nevertheless, despite the performance and the late goal Liverpool got those crucial 3 points and after Man City dropped points themselves we are now in a safer looking 6th and closing the gap.
A very fitting result for the lads on the night that Liverpool celebrated the great man that is Bill Shankly, legends such as Ian St.John, Keegan and good old Rushy were all present for the North West clash and The Kop End portrayed a massive mosaic all part of the great show put on in memory of one of the best Manger's ever to grace football.
Liverpool got off to a great start after getting an early goal via David N'Gog, a glancing header saw the ball home and we were in fron…

Martinez's Lactics Travel To Anfield

Wigan are next up at Anfield tomorrow night in what should be an unpredictable midweek fixture for the lads. Firstly going by our own recent form, anything could happen and secondly looking at Wigan, they beat Chelsea, but they also fell to a massive 9-1 defeat from Spurs so which Wigan will turn up?

For Liverpool Riera, Kelly, NEZ and Babel are all still expected to be unavailable. Wigan's only problem is Emmerson Boyce after a head injury he sustained in the Stoke match.

Martinez is not expecting this to be an easy fixture though even with our boys on the back of some bad results he was quoted saying:

"Liverpool are on the back of a disappointing result, but they have a world-class squad which alone makes them a very dangerous side."Effectively he is right we do arguably have a world class squad especially in the likes of Gerrard, Torres, Reina, Mascherano etc but from the performances so far this season you wouldn't think so would you? It's only a matter of time…
