2nd Leg: Benfica

Image
Could the Dane be utilised at left back?...
Liverpool are looking to turn around the tie against Benfica tomorrow with the 2nd leg at Anfield. After gaining only an away goal as a positive in the 2-1 defeat last Thursday we still have a great chance of going through to the semi finals of the competition.
If we do manage to get through tomorrow evening we will be facing either Valencia or Athletico Madrid depending on the outcome of their own tie. The result from the first leg played at the Mestalla saw both teams score twice meaning the second leg is poised evenly. So for Liverpool it could quite easily be either of the two teams.
Both of which would be interesting, Valencia obviously for players like David Villa and the huge link between the club and Rafa Benitez. Athletico with the ties between the club and ex captain Fernando Torres would also provide a good atmosphere.
Benfica's manager Jorge Jesus has again made all of his team available despite the fact that Weldon missed a trai…

Kuyt Strikes Again

Image
Liverpool collected 3 points yesterday along with a clean sheet and a huge sense of accomplishment as our unbeaten run continues. Despite the performance again perhaps not being as fluid as many people may like, crucially, the result was welcomed by all.
Benitez fielded a very strong XI, to the surprise of quite a few fans, he opted to start both Aquilani and Steven Gerrard, he also opted to play Kuyt behind David N'Gog, as opposed to the option of lone striker. It was a rather unfamiliar layout, although it worked.
In defence it was the same four lads from the 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Agger only just coming back from a knock, he was named on the bench but it was Insua, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos and Carragher who made up the back four.
Lucas had to settle for an appearance from the bench as Mascherano was chosen to partner Aquilani in the heart of the midfield and Riera made another appearance on the left wing.
For the majority of the first half we appeared to have carried …

A Long Needed 3 Points

Image
Liverpool beat Martinez's Wigan yesterday at Anfield and secured a much needed win. The boys managed to put two past ex Liverpool keeper Chris Kirkland although it was still some of the same old story after the lads conceded another very late goal which sort of put a spoil on what could have been a better result.
Nevertheless, despite the performance and the late goal Liverpool got those crucial 3 points and after Man City dropped points themselves we are now in a safer looking 6th and closing the gap.
A very fitting result for the lads on the night that Liverpool celebrated the great man that is Bill Shankly, legends such as Ian St.John, Keegan and good old Rushy were all present for the North West clash and The Kop End portrayed a massive mosaic all part of the great show put on in memory of one of the best Manger's ever to grace football.
Liverpool got off to a great start after getting an early goal via David N'Gog, a glancing header saw the ball home and we were in fron…

Liverpool Exit Carling Cup After Losing 2-1 To Arsenal

Image
A good performance from the lads at The Emirates this evening but unfortunately not good enough. Liverpool lost 2-1 after finding it difficult at the final push to get an equaliser but despite the defeat there were positives aplenty to gain from this match.

The starting eleven consisted of several players we rarely see in Liverpool's first eleven so tonight's game gave us another insight into the players that are shadowed by Liverpool's first choices.

Kyrgiakos;
After just coming back from an injury that was orginally thought to have been worse than it actually was the Greek was somewhat of a presence in the defence for Liverpool tonight. In all honesty he didn't have a superb game, a few silly mistakes were made but between himself and Skrtel tonight i would say he was the more defensively sound.

It was a good chance to look at his dominance in defence as i had heard alot about his strength and power he used at AEK Athens and also his invaluable experience. I hope he cont…
