Lille Prove More Than A Hazard For Liverpool

Image
Time to turn your frustrations into support for a good cause.
Late goals were almost becoming a thing of the past for Liverpool but we were back to our old ways against Lille last night. Despite an improved performance compared to our 90minutes against Wigan we still let things slide after being unable to capitalize on a steady 80 minutes or so.
Benitez drafted in Ryan Babel for this one after Yossi Benayoun picked up an injury, i shall move on to commenting on his performance later. A lot of people pre match were calling for Aquilani to make the start, mainly because he clearly deserves it but also in a game against Lille, you would think he would be greatly suited. After looking back at the game too, it is clear to me that we would have benefited from some of the more attacking aspects of the Italian.
Lille started the first half in a very lively fashion, they obviously realised that they would need a result on home turf to truly trouble Liverpool over the two legs.
Liverpool dealt wel…

Liverpool To Face Mancini's City

Image
Bellamy could cause problems...
New look Man City under Roberto Mancini have not exactly been setting the league on fire since they opted to get rid of Mark Hughes. Liverpool travel to The City Of Manchester Stadium tomorrow with 3 points being the aim.
Man City's last 5 fixtures read LWLWD. Within that time they have suffered defeats to Everton and even relegation battling Hull, they have also dropped points against Stoke and were lucky to have even left with the 1 point.
On the other hand, despite our 1-0 loss to Arsenal, we are on the back of a steady run of form WDWWL compared to City's up and down, at least we have some consistency not to mention 4 clean sheets out of the 5 matches.
We also had a successful night in the Europa League after the lads managed to beat Unirea Urziceni 1-0, again keeping a clean sheet.
So we have more than enough positives to go out and fight for this win.
Man City however unsteady they may have been of late though should not be shunned for their ab…

My First Ever Anfield Experience Ends With A Win

Image
My view...
So this was it. Date: Thursday 18th February, Time: 3:00pm, Destination: Anfield.
First point of call was the local BP station, Dave needed petrol, Emz needed some sort of beverage and i needed a paper and something edible. After stocking up on junk we got back into the car and headed straight for the notorious M6.
After hearing the old "oh you're going on the M6 car park are you?" for days before i was expecting the worst, in all honesty, it wasn't all that bad.
Sat Nav at the ready for when we came off the M6 we did end up on the motorway for quite a long time. The first moment of worry was when the overhead signs began to read "slow, incident ahead". I just hoped this incident would be passable in quick time.
Dya know what it was? ...
A National Express coach that had stopped dead in the middle lane of the M6 with some fat driver looking quite bemused at the wheel. I don't know if the passengers knew where they were but it certainly wasn&…

Liverpool Hope To Start Europa League In Style

Image
Benitez has promised to treat the Europa league with respect and just like the fans is hoping that we can have a good run in the competition. Despite the disappointment and realisation that we do not find ourselves in an elusive Champion's League clash this week but a Europa League one, excitement and an atmosphere appears to be building up for Thursday nights clash.
Unirea Urziceni are unfamiliar opposition to Liverpool to say the least and very unfamiliar in particular. They are a Romanian side who play in Liga I. Strangely enough their nickname is Chelsea de lalomita roughly translated to "The Chelsea of Lalomita", Lalomita being the county of Romania whey they are from.
If they are anything at all like Chelsea on a European night at Anfield then it could prove quite a tasty fixture.
The majority of their team are Romanian born although they do have Brazilian and Argentinian players. Perhaps their most prolific players are long term servers for the club: Marius Onofras a…

Can Liverpool Shoot Down Gunners?

Image
How punditry can change within the space of... A month?
December was a pretty shoddy month for Liverpool, heads were hanging, confidence was low, we'd been knocked out the Champions League, beaten by Portsmouth and beaten by Arsenal. With things beginning to hit a new low it was Arsenal who were on form winning 5 out of their 6 Premier League fixtures that month.
Now were into February though it appears the tides have turned.
Arsenal are now showing the poor results including a draw with Everton (pah!), loss to Stoke and they have failed to beat either of their big rivals in Chelsea and Manchester United.
Even looking at our own season we can still say we have beaten United, beaten Stoke and also got a draw. Not to mention our double over the bluenoses, yet it's Arsenal who's decline continued to be ignored, pundits remained confident that they would still find themselves in a title race despite all the warning signs.
Warning signs such as their inability to defend pacey counte…

Kuyt Strikes Again

Image
Liverpool collected 3 points yesterday along with a clean sheet and a huge sense of accomplishment as our unbeaten run continues. Despite the performance again perhaps not being as fluid as many people may like, crucially, the result was welcomed by all.
Benitez fielded a very strong XI, to the surprise of quite a few fans, he opted to start both Aquilani and Steven Gerrard, he also opted to play Kuyt behind David N'Gog, as opposed to the option of lone striker. It was a rather unfamiliar layout, although it worked.
In defence it was the same four lads from the 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Agger only just coming back from a knock, he was named on the bench but it was Insua, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos and Carragher who made up the back four.
Lucas had to settle for an appearance from the bench as Mascherano was chosen to partner Aquilani in the heart of the midfield and Riera made another appearance on the left wing.
For the majority of the first half we appeared to have carried …

Coyle's Bolton Travel To Anfield

Image
Liverpool enter tomorrow's clash with Bolton on the back of a 5 game unbeaten run in the Premier League. Although this makes for good reading, it does not really reflect the performances from the team.
The first win over Wolves had good aspects to it, but again we were perhaps helped when the Wolves side were weakened due to a sending off, it was only then when we managed to break the deadlock.

The Villa win, although a massive one, again did not bring many positives in terms of play from the lads. It was the magic of Fernando Torres in the dying seconds that secured the three points.

The draw with Stoke was only made acceptable due to poor results from other teams around us, again we conceded a silly late goal and should have done better.

The win over Tottenham is perhaps the only real good performance from the Reds in this collection of results, a brilliant team effort and enthusiastic stint from Dutchman Dirk Kuyt saw us keep a clean sheet and put two past Gomes.

The 0-0 draw with …

Liverpool Fail To Attack Wolves

Image
Liverpool were held to a very frustrating and disappointing 0-0 stalemate last night at Molineux. For my first ever experience of seeing the lads play, there weren't too many positives.

After meeting Kenny Dalglish moments before i sat down to watch the match, i was beginning to think nothing could top that now, and it didn't. I also met that Farley bloke after he came into the boardroom to do some of his now famous Liverpool impressions, however, the match that followed would not provide much to smile about.

So the first shock of the night came when i was handed the team sheet in the boardroom, i could not believe Gerrard was starting, i knew it was now highly likely that he would be on the bench, but i would never of guessed he would of started let alone play the full 90minutes.
I was glad to see the likes of Kyrgiakos, Riera, Carragher and Reina on too, all for different reasons. One thing that did puzzle me slighlty was the option of Kuyt on his own. Although i know it has wo…

FA Cup: Can We Mount A Challenge?

Image
Liverpool face Reading for the second time tomorrow night at Anfield in the hope that take two will be enough to break the earlier deadlock between the two clubs. With the winner progressing and facing Burnley at home for the next fixture, the prospect of challenging for the FA Cup is becoming more and more realistic.

Benitez fielded a very strong 11 for the last meeting, and opted to keep in Reina, Carragher, Gerrard and Torres. I should imagine that it will be a similar team put out from the Gaffa again for this replay, Benitez has made it clear that he is taking the competition seriously and is determined to mount a respectable challenge.
Liverpool appeared to struggle slightly against Reading last time out but this was mainly down to a belief filled Royals side who also had the home advantage. You get the feeling that at Anfield, we will come out victorious.
With a draw leading to extra time and then penalties, i would always fancy ourselves in that situation, so the only option for …

Opportunity

Image
Next on the fixture list for Liverpool this year is Portsmouth, with new manager Avram Grant, Pompey do appear to be on the up albeit slightly, still Liverpool must look at this as a fantastic opportunity to finally go on some sort of a winning run. With Wolves next up at Anfield this is a brilliant chance for the lads to gain some ground.
Liverpool are still without the options of Martin Kelly, Nabil El Zhar and Ryan Babel. However Albert Riera and Glen Johnson will both be subject to late fitness tests. Hopefully this will come good and will provide greater choice for Benitez on Saturday.
Portsmouth's recent form does not make excellent reading but when you take into consideration that within these 5 fixtures they have played Chelsea, Villa and Manchester United, it doesn't seem so bad - LLWDL. Althoguh they lost to Chelsea on Wednesday, in all fairness they had alot of the ball and alot of the attack, they could have won it if it wasn't for a bad tackle on Ivanovic which …

Pride Of Merseyside

Image
Liverpool were met with success yesterday after putting two past a lively Everton side and also managing to keep a clean sheet for the first time away from home this season.
Liverpool started a strong side although Fernando Torres was still not available after his late fitness test. Aurelio, Riera and Benayoun were all options after the 'horse placenta' continued to prove it's worth. Nabil El Zhar was also on the bench back from injury and of course Aquilani.
It only took 12 minutes for Liverpool to capitalize after Javier Mascherano opted for a punt from outside the area, after the shot took a deflection from Everton's Yobo it headed past a beaten Howard and the lads were 1-0 up. Mascherano was absolutely ecstatic judging by his celebration, it's just a shame that the "dubious goals committee" appear to have awarded it to Jospeh Yobo nevertheless the passion from Mascherano was clear to see.
For the rest of the first half there were many points to highlight…
