Liverpool Hope To Start Europa League In Style

Image
Benitez has promised to treat the Europa league with respect and just like the fans is hoping that we can have a good run in the competition. Despite the disappointment and realisation that we do not find ourselves in an elusive Champion's League clash this week but a Europa League one, excitement and an atmosphere appears to be building up for Thursday nights clash.
Unirea Urziceni are unfamiliar opposition to Liverpool to say the least and very unfamiliar in particular. They are a Romanian side who play in Liga I. Strangely enough their nickname is Chelsea de lalomita roughly translated to "The Chelsea of Lalomita", Lalomita being the county of Romania whey they are from.
If they are anything at all like Chelsea on a European night at Anfield then it could prove quite a tasty fixture.
The majority of their team are Romanian born although they do have Brazilian and Argentinian players. Perhaps their most prolific players are long term servers for the club: Marius Onofras a…

Stalemate

Liverpool left Ewood Park on Saturday with a belly full of pies but not a belly full of pride. 90 minutes could not provide a separation between the two teams after the game ended goalless.Rafa started a slightly different looking side with both Benayoun and Riera making starts, nevertheless minus Torres it was a good side, fully capable of picking up the three points here and perhaps even a few goals.
The first half was uneventful to say the least. The most memorable moments were the numerous free-kicks, offsides and chances gone wide.
So with nothing notable to report in the first half of Steven Gerrard's 500th game the lads came out fresh and ready for the next 45minutes. 0-0 is not a scoreline to be worried about at half time but as it pushes nearer and nearer to the 80minute mark you start to wonder if it will be your day...
Barely 5 minutes into the second half and Rafa makes a substitution, i can't remember the last time i saw a substitution from Rafa that came before 60mi…

Liverpool Welcome Sky Blues To Anfield

Image
With the international break now over, Liverpool look to revamp there season once again after continuing a bad run of form via the draws picked up against Birmingham and Lyon.

Currently sitting 7th in the table on a total of 19 points Liverpool have the prospect of leap-frogging City and at best sealing 5th place on goal difference.
This is a key match in terms of the fight for a top four finish, with Liverpool's desire to continue to compete in the Champion's League and even more so the need for the revenue, City and their megabucks are looking to break into the top four and shake things up a bit
So will the cash of City compete with the tactics of Rafa?
You only have to look at Rafa's last few signings:
£17.5m – Glen Johnson,£17.1m – Alberto Aquilani, £2m, Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Daniel Ayala for £160,000 a total of just over £36m. Then glance over to Manchester City and realise that Robinho and Tevez were almost that alone.
Benitez not only faces a team with more cash, he also…

Liverpool 2 Manchester United 0 ... Crisis?

Image
So with the whole of the footballing world who wasn't related to Liverpool FC & even some of our own kopites looking at this fixture and just praying that the defeat was not a humiliation it appeared that the result was written out in permanent ink before the game had even started.

Liverpool were going through a big dip in form, no players had particularly been up to scratch lately and the world had turned it's attention to Rafael Benitez. Somehow he was solely to blame, the talk of the boss having no job by Monday morning was transforming from a snowball into an avalanche. The pressure was on, on Rafa, on the players, on Liverpool FC.

Even the most optimistic fan like myself would have sat down at Anfield, in the pub, or in front of Richard Keys in their living room this afternoon thinking realistically if we don't go out and do this, our season could be over in October.

With nerves on end and excitement bubbling the news that Steven Gerrard would not make the bench only…

Rafa Results

Rafa Results So a couple of posts back I decided to talk about the so called “Rafa debate” like it or lump it the matter is on most people's lips so I figured it would be a good issue to raise on the blog.

What did I want to find out?I thought it would be very interesting to attempt to collect views on the manager from not necessarily just Liverpool fans, but fans of other clubs within the Premier League. After posting on two website forums; Footbo & FourFourTwo I did manage to gather a few opinions and views.

What were the findings?
Firstly just so you get an idea of what everyone was being asked, this was the general question that was posted on both forums:

What do YOU think about Mr.Rafael Benitez? I'm looking for serious and honest opinions as the posts will be featured in my blog. It doesn't matter if your Liverpool, United, Celtic, Barcelona wherever you are please let us know what you think. Do you like his tactics? His formations? His play in the transfer market? Do…

The Rafa Debate

Image
Is he actually the managerial version of Marmite at this point in time? Because it truly does seem "you either love him or you hate him". Time and time again i have voiced my opinion on the matter and it seems alot of fans have very different views on the Gaffa. I've been reading some articles again this week on the Boss and Gilett and Hicks, just the general "Liverpool have lost three games let's dig up the dirt and cause a panic" nonsense. Upon doing this i stumbled across several interesting articles namely this piece from the Times Online which I'm sure you would find a good read.
What struck me the most was infact a comment left by a Manchester United fan, and fair play to the lad, it made sense. He went on to say;
Rafa was only put in charge of transfers this year, so you can't blame him for the many failed ones before. Besides, the only ones remaining from when he took over are Gerrard and Carragher, two of the better players. Getting rid of th…

15 Minutes That Shook The World

Liverpool Suffer Champions League Knock

Image
So,we're down but we are definitely not out. We all expected the trip to Italy to be a tough tie but i don't think many were expecting the lashing Liverpool appeared to get tonight. The viola's star player who i read about this morning in several articles was definitely portrayed correctly as "a threat".

Benitez fielded a side with one swap, the injured Mascherano out for Aurelio who would be sitting on the left wing for the start of this Champions League match. A rocky start to say the least after a rather slow opening to the game but it began to become a bit more lively for Fiorentina who had started the match in exactly the right mind-set by the looks of things.

Dirk Kuyt and Glen Johnson appeared to be the only means of attack running up to the 20minutes mark after several pushes forward were confidently stopped by the experienced back four of Fiorentina. As for the Italians the young Jovetic was already causing our defence some havoc, with his skill and speed …

Rafa Reaches 300

Image
For the Debreceni game on Wednesday night Rafael Benitez will reach a huge 300 games of management over the Red's. One of only eight managers in the clubs history to do so. Due to this milestone the statistics have been dragged up and i must say if you didn't already know, they are pretty impressive on Rafa's part.

On a time scale of 300 games in charge:

Dalglish = 61%

Paisley = 57%

Benitez = 57%

Shankly =52%

Houllier = 51%

Watson = 44%

Kay = 40%

Patterson = 37%

In all fairness to Mr.Benitez and some of the fans who find him not quite their cup of tea, you can't argue with that stat, he's up there with the greats. Better than Shankly and level with Paisley, we all know this will never put him on a par with these men after what they did by changing the club and making it great but this stat is one of the only "facts" excuse the pun, that can boost confidence into those that doubt him. Compare this fact to a certain Mr.Ferguson from across the concrete pond and you&#…
