Another Late Goal, Another Disappointing Result But It Wasn't All Bad

Liverpool ended this years Champions League campaign last night on a bit of a low note. After playing some good football and looking the better side at many stages within the game they were defeated by a late Fiorentina goal which ensured that the Italians would top the group

Benitez had a chance to start an experimental 11 for this match and that he did. The starting line up consisted of Cavalieri, Darby, Dossena and of course Aquilani. It was a great chance to see some less frequent faces and it was also a very exciting moment for many a Liverpool fan poised and ready to analyze Aquilani's first start for the club since being signed in August.

The first 45 minutes consisted of a confident and forward pushing Liverpool. Despite the positive play the final product appeared to be the problem though, shots were sparse and Fiorentina were becoming more dangerous on the counter attack.

Cavalieri was called to duty on a few occasions in the first half and each time he reacted calmly and c…

Viola Grace The Red Of Anfield Tomorrow Night

So Liverpool face Fiorentina at Anfield tomorrow in a match that could have meant so much but will in fact be almost meaningless. After Fiorentina themselves caused Liverpool's run in the Champions League to come to an abrupt end the match will not be one of those famous European nights at Anfield.
On the plus side the match will provide an opportunity to see some of the less frequently used players in the squad. It has also been revealed that Aquilani will start the game, see Rafa's quotes here. Fernando Torres is also set to be on the bench so hopefully our star man will feature at some point and be available for the Arsenal game on the weekend. There will also be a big protest via chants, banners and fans showing their frustration with the two Yanks upstairs as Spirit Of Shankly will be using this match to pin point what the majority of the fan base feels.
Stat Sandwich: Liverpool go into this game on the back of a 6 match unbeaten run.Liverpool have never lost two games at hom…

How To Make A Memorable European Night

Liverpool. Debrecen. Fiorentina. Lyon. Two kick offs at the same time. A list of injuries. A run of bad results. An atmospheric stadium. An unhealthy reliance on another result. Faith.
Anyone who is not looking forward to the game in Hungary tomorrow night must be mental. Even though this could spell out a nightmare for Liverpool the sheer roller coaster ride of the combination of getting our result and praying that the other result will come in is going to be phenomenal.

The same as several seasons gone by, we find ourselves needing a miracle to progress past the group stages. And just like in 2005 when Olympiakos came to Anfield, the right results tomorrow night could lead to an epic European clash against Fiorentina.

Debrecen have lost all 4 games they have played in the Champion's League. They have scored 5 goals, all against Fiorentina on two separate occasions.
The task is made harder for Debrecen as they do not play their Champion's League home games at their actual hom…

Can We Compose Ourselves For Chelsea?

After Tuesday nights result from Italy you'd be fooled to not be left feeling deflated. So assuming the lads are feeling this way too, off the back of a confidence knock can we turn it around at Stamford Bridge?

Stamford Bridge has always been looked at as one of the most difficult grounds to go to within the Premier League, but is anyone up for a history lesson? Because I'm sure you haven't forgot.
Let's roll back to October 2008. Liverpool face a trip down South to the blue fortress of Chelsea, a team that had not been beaten at home since February 2004! I remember every critic and pundit in the land not even allowing us a glimmer of hope today, not only because of this daunting record but we were also missing the main man; Fernando Torres would NOT start the game. The pundits were in their element, aside from a very frustrated Phil Thompson who would try his best to make his claim that Liverpool did infact have some sort of a chance. To be honest, he wasn't fooli…

Liverpool Suffer Champions League Knock

So,we're down but we are definitely not out. We all expected the trip to Italy to be a tough tie but i don't think many were expecting the lashing Liverpool appeared to get tonight. The viola's star player who i read about this morning in several articles was definitely portrayed correctly as "a threat".

Benitez fielded a side with one swap, the injured Mascherano out for Aurelio who would be sitting on the left wing for the start of this Champions League match. A rocky start to say the least after a rather slow opening to the game but it began to become a bit more lively for Fiorentina who had started the match in exactly the right mind-set by the looks of things.

Dirk Kuyt and Glen Johnson appeared to be the only means of attack running up to the 20minutes mark after several pushes forward were confidently stopped by the experienced back four of Fiorentina. As for the Italians the young Jovetic was already causing our defence some havoc, with his skill and speed …

Fiorentina Preview

Fiorentina tomorrow in the Champions League and for me this is an interesting fixture. Fiorentina in my opinion are the hardest opposition in the group although alot of people seem to differ from my opinion and feel as though Lyon will be more of a threat, either way, this one isn't going to be a walk in the park.
Fiorentina's last 6 matches has seen them win four, draw 1 and lose 1. Fiorentina have not won a home game in the Champions League since March 2000. Hold your horses! This fact is true but when you consider the sides absence from the competition you realise this is not a real reflection of things to come.
A somewhat worrying stat i dug out this morning is that if you look at Fiorentina'sUEFA Cup (now Europa League) stats they have never lost at home to English opposition. A very strong side at home it seems so can we break them down?
So what do we have to back up our chances? Well our last 4 visits to Italian opposition in general have seen us not concede a single g…

Liverpool V Hull

We welcome Phil Brown and his lads down to Anfield today. It is no secret that Hull are in a very bad place at the moment, they have not won away from home since March the 4th, they last won at home against Bolton.

They haven't scored more then one goal in 20 consecutive matches compared to a Liverpool team that has scored in all of their last 17 premier league games. Last season however as we all know Hull were one of the teams that caused that dreaded draw, one of which added to the slipping of the title out of our hands. I don't think this will be the case today, Hull were a far stronger team at that time last season.
We have met Hull 8 times in the league, winning 6 and drawing the remaining two.
My prediction - 2-0.
In other news Fiorentina have agreed to remove fencing surrounding the area of the ground in which the travelling fans will be staying during the European match next week. Fiorentina have also made a fan zone near to the stadium where free refreshments are availa…
