Late Coutinho Stunner Sends Reds Through

Image
A late burst of magic dust from our trickster Philippe Coutinho was enough to see Liverpool progress to the 5th round of the FA Cup on Wednesday night. The Reds eventually managed to beat Bolton after the home side netted a penalty in the 58th minute. A dismissal followed soon after for Bolton and Sterling found an equaliser pushing the Reds on to find their last gasp winner.

The first half was pretty poor for Liverpool with the same predictable outcome being put on display. Get the ball to Coutinho or Sterling and hope they can weave through and bag a goal. Problem was though that Bolton were not prepared to let us through and were more than content in creating attacks of their own.

By the end of the first half though, there was no real excitement and both goalkeepers had remained relatively quiet. The only moment of note really was a yellow card picked up by Danns that would prove to be vital in the second half for Liverpool.

At 53 minutes Liverpool replaced Adam Lallana with Jorda…

MATCH PREVIEW: Bolton V Liverpool

Liverpool make the short trip to Bolton on Wednesday evening as they aim to make it through to the 5th round of the FA Cup. The first meeting between the two sides ended in a 0-0 draw forcing a replay at the Macron. Neil Lennon's side will fancy their chances at home to Liverpool but Brendan Rodgers will surely be determined to push his side closer to some silverware after being knocked out of the League Cup by Chelsea.

Injuries for Liverpool remain the same with just Brad Jones and Jon Flanagan unavailable. Steven Gerrard is set to return after being rested against West Ham and if he features it will be his 700th appearance in the Red shirt.

For Bolton they are unable to call upon Adam Bogdan and Darren Pratley. Doubts are also hanging over the fitness of Craig Davies and ex Red Emile Heskey.

Prior to the last meeting between the two clubs there have been 133 fixtures with Liverpool notching up 57 wins. The Reds' last trip to Bolton ended in a 3-1 loss with just Craig Bellam…

Bogdan Keeps Bolton In FA Cup As Reds Fail To Score

Image
Liverpool were in action against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday night as Brendan Rodgers aimed to get his side through to the next round of the FA Cup. With some huge upsets earlier in the day as Chelsea and Manchester City crashed out, it was a real opportunity for the Reds who unfortunately were unable to seal their place.

However, we are still in the competition and with an away tie against Bolton you have to feel we still have a good chance, if we can solve our finishing issues!

Brendan Rodgers fielded a slightly changed XI as the likes of Steven Gerrard and Martin Skrtel were dropped. Raheem Sterling however was placed up front again despite the very important Chelsea game on Tuesday evening.

With Emile Heskey and Eidur Gudjohnsen up front for Bolton it seemed like destiny would write their names on the walls of history in the FA Cup but in reality Bolton offered little in front of goal.

Liverpool as they have done so often of late were creating pacey attacks with Raheem Sterling …

MATCH PREVIEW: Liverpool V Bolton Wanderers

Liverpool welcome Bolton Wanderers to Anfield on Saturday evening for an FA Cup clash and in the process will welcome back ex Red Emile Heskey. He's sure to get a warm welcome as he steps out in front of the Kop but the Anfield faithful will be hoping his name does not end up on the score sheet.

A much improved performance for the Reds against Chelsea in the League Cup on Tuesday evening has put Liverpool very much on a high. The downside for Brendan Rodgers of course is that he will have to manage his team selection with one eye on the must win second leg against Chelsea.

Injury news for the Reds has been somewhat improved this week with Dejan Lovren, Mario Balotelli and Glen Johnson all back in training. For Bolton they have a growing injury list and are unable to call upon Lee Chung-yong, Marc Tierney, Craig Davies, Mark Davies and Max Clayton.

Bolton's last league game saw them notch up a win over Sheffield Wednesday. They currently find themselves 15th in the table howev…

Bellamy Scores In Dismal Bolton Display

Image
If i walked into a club, thinking and acting like i was better than everybody else, i'd most probably, within an hour and a half or so, get battered. Which is exactly what happened to Liverpool on Saturday. They walked into Bolton's club, acting like they were better than them, like the three points were theirs before they'd kicked a ball and then, they were battered.

Inferiority complex is usually something i disagree with because i used to believe that footballers, whoever they play for, always want to beat the opposition, they can't be content with just thinking they are better and hope that magic does the rest.

Not everyone on the pitch yesterday suffered from this complex, Craig Bellamy is a good example, but too many players who should have been embarrassing a Bolton side, didn't look arsed.

Dalglish made his thoughts clear post match by saying "If that's the level they expect this football club to play at, they won't be here long." And fai…

Liverpool Require Win After Poor Run In League

Image
Liverpool make the trip to Bolton on Saturday for another Premier League fixture. After a disappointing draw against Stoke at Anfield, the Reds will be looking to put that behind them and take all three points from a struggling Bolton side.

Liverpool don't have any new injury worries although Jay Spearing still hasn't recovered from his hamstring problem. Luis Suarez is also still unavailable as he continues his suspension.

Bolton are welcoming back goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen as he returns from an injury to his thigh, it isn't certain whether he will start though.

The last time the two sides met was in August last year. Liverpool won the game 3-1 with Henderson scoring his first Liverpool goal. Trips to the Reebok have been pretty kind to the Reds too, we have to go back to 2006 for a slim win for Bolton.

Bolton are currently lying in 19th whilst Liverpool are in 7th. A win for Liverpool could potentially move them up to 6th.

Bolton Win Takes Liverpool Top Of The Table

Image
Of course this could all change within a few hours but let's enjoy it ay?!

With three different goalscorers yesterday and Suarez not even on the score sheet, it was a sublime 90 minutes at Anfield for Dalglish's boys. The passing was flowing beautifully, Lucas was a monstrous shield to his defence and the back four when required were solid themselves.

Liverpool took just fifteen minutes to get their first goal. A stunning outside boot pass from Luis Suarez caused problems in the box, Stewart Downing's shot was saved by Jaaskelainen but the ball was not yet out of danger for Bolton.

Jordon Henderson was at the ready and a lovely strike on his left foot got him his first Liverpool goal.

I must say Henderson out of the three big new signings in midfield has perhaps been the one less involved in peoples conversations, because of the immediate impact of Downing and Adam, people were forgetting to praise the stints put in by the 21 year old. It was great yesterday to see him so…

Liverpool Search For Anfield Win

Image
Liverpool face Bolton tomorrow for their third Premier League fixture of the season. On the back of a 3-1 win in the Carling Cup and a 2-0 victory over Arsenal, the Reds will be more than confident heading into this fixture against Owen Coyle's side.

Liverpool are still without Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson's hamstring injury looks set to keep him out again on Saturday. Raul Meireles will also be unavailable after a collarbone injury gained in the midweek tie with Exeter.

For Bolton they are without Ricketts, Meirs and Steinsson. Also out is Alonso who suffered a similar fate to Meireles, getting injured midweek, the break to a bone in his foot will keep him out for nearly 2 months.

Bolton have made a good start to the season after a rampant victory over Queens Park Rangers, they were unlucky in a hard fought fixture against Manchester City, putting two goals past the big spenders and missing out on a point by the slenderest of margins.

Cole Sinks Coyle's Side In Late Win For Liverpool

Image
Cole nets the winner...
Liverpool shockingly managed to kick off 2011 with three points yesterday after a hard fought game against Bolton Wanderers eventually saw the Reds come from behind to beat Owen Coyle's boys.
Whilst the pressure has eased on manager Roy Hodgson according to the press i think it's more realistic to say that whilst most fans were pleased with the improved performance it's safe to say that opinions on who is at the Anfield helm have not changed.
Fair play to Roy on one aspect though after reintroducing Maxi Rodriguez into the side and also on the inclusion of Daniel Agger. It was a risk to start the big Dane but i thought Agger had a fantastic game. Another key point to the starting line up was the missing Steven Gerrard, apparently fatigued after the Wolves match he was left out of the midfield. Reina was in goal as always with Johnson, Skrtel and surprisingly Fabio Aurelio making up the rest of the back four (it was nice to see Aurelio there instead of …

New Year, New Start? Probably Not, No.

Image
I think we missed Maxi last match...
As much as i would like to get excited about the prospect of 2011 being a brand new fresh start for Liverpool, i can't really see it can you? After Wednesday night's pathetic display against Wolverhampton Wanderers it does make you wonder how much more embarrassing things could get.
Bolton under Owen Coyle are a decent side and even the factor of us being ok at home has been slashed now after falling to a side bottom of the table with no real return in terms of attempts at goal.
Bolton Wanderers are currently in 6th position which is a fantastic start to the season for them, in the meantime Liverpool are hovering in 12th with some points to make up in order to even get close to a more respectable position.
Liverpool still have injuries to Spearing and Carragher. A possible doubt is Joe Cole who suffered an ankle knock and Steven Gerrard although he should start has questionable fitness especially after watching him towards the end of the game a…

Torres Trick Sets Up Maxi Treat

Image
Maxi celebrates the winner for Liverpool...
There were no horrors in store for Liverpool yesterday after their Halloween clash with Bolton Wanderers ended in a 1-0 win. The victory takes the Reds up into 12th and finally out of the relegation zone. Perhaps not a perfect performance and it did begin to get worrying as we got closer to the 90minute mark but refreshingly, the lads didn't give up and in the end we deserved the win.
Roy fielded an unchanged line up which meant thankfully Christian Poulsen was on the bench. Glen Johnson was still deemed unfit so Jamie Carragher was again played out of position making Skrtel and Kyrgiakos the centre pair.
Liverpool started well, Joe Cole was quick off the mark sending in some lovely balls and Konchesky was trying his best to push up field to help with the threat. Fernando Torres was unlucky a few times with an unsuccessful header and an offside call but it was clear the Spaniard was causing problems.
For Bolton, Stuart Holden was perhaps the…

Are Liverpool In For A Fright?

Image
Ok, you can take your halloween mask off now Kev... Oh...
Liverpool travel to Bolton tomorrow to face Owen Coyle's side in what could be an eventful clash. Bolton are in the top half of the table at the moment and going well. They've lost no games at home so far this season so could be hard to break down.
As for Liverpool well we all know where we are, in the bloody relegation zone. Liverpool are also yet to get an away win chalked up on the board so if the tides are beginning to turn in our favour after a pleasing Blackburn win then really we need to beat Bolton on their home turf.
Problem is, yet again, confidence is running low for me. Going on the Blackburn display i'd fancy us, but going on our recent collective displays... Well it's a worry.
Bolton have quite a big injury list and will be without Gardner, Davis, O'Brien and Samuel. Goal threats Elmander and Kevin Davies however will be available for Coyle.
Liverpool are still without Dirk Kuyt and Daniel Agger who …

Kuyt Strikes Again

Image
Liverpool collected 3 points yesterday along with a clean sheet and a huge sense of accomplishment as our unbeaten run continues. Despite the performance again perhaps not being as fluid as many people may like, crucially, the result was welcomed by all.
Benitez fielded a very strong XI, to the surprise of quite a few fans, he opted to start both Aquilani and Steven Gerrard, he also opted to play Kuyt behind David N'Gog, as opposed to the option of lone striker. It was a rather unfamiliar layout, although it worked.
In defence it was the same four lads from the 0-0 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Agger only just coming back from a knock, he was named on the bench but it was Insua, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos and Carragher who made up the back four.
Lucas had to settle for an appearance from the bench as Mascherano was chosen to partner Aquilani in the heart of the midfield and Riera made another appearance on the left wing.
For the majority of the first half we appeared to have carried …

Coyle's Bolton Travel To Anfield

Image
Liverpool enter tomorrow's clash with Bolton on the back of a 5 game unbeaten run in the Premier League. Although this makes for good reading, it does not really reflect the performances from the team.
The first win over Wolves had good aspects to it, but again we were perhaps helped when the Wolves side were weakened due to a sending off, it was only then when we managed to break the deadlock.

The Villa win, although a massive one, again did not bring many positives in terms of play from the lads. It was the magic of Fernando Torres in the dying seconds that secured the three points.

The draw with Stoke was only made acceptable due to poor results from other teams around us, again we conceded a silly late goal and should have done better.

The win over Tottenham is perhaps the only real good performance from the Reds in this collection of results, a brilliant team effort and enthusiastic stint from Dutchman Dirk Kuyt saw us keep a clean sheet and put two past Gomes.

The 0-0 draw with …
