London Lads Lead Liverpool Win

Image
Liverpool collected all three points at Upton Park on Sunday but it was close to being a different story for the Reds when they lost their lead in the first half. On the score sheet for Liverpool were Glen Johnson and Joe Cole, Shelvey almost got the last touch for the third goal too, making it a very Southern affair.

With no Luis Suarez, Brendan Rodgers did make the decision to start Jonjo Shelvey up front with Sterling and Downing supporting him. It's obviously not a natural role for Jonjo but he played in the number 9 position in the Europa League and actually did quite well.

The game started encouragingly for Liverpool who burst out the blocks intent on attack. West Ham had picked up some good results of late and we certainly couldn't afford to take them lightly. The first real chance of the game fell to Diame but it was a comfortable stop for Reina.

Glen Johnson was very lively to start with and he was beating winger Matt Jarvis with ease enabling him to either head for …

Liverpool Lose Lead Twice

Image
The Reds had to settle for a draw with visitors Young Boys on Thursday evening after a very good performance with a bit part team nearly saw them take all three points and cement their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League. It wasn't to be that easy for Brendan though and the Swiss side found returns for both of Liverpool's goals.

Brendan opted to start Jonjo Shelvey as a lone striker for this clash and the likes of Cole and Downing also got a run out too. Henderson also started but eventually ended up in defence whilst Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard started from the bench.

The game started with a shock for Liverpool after Young Boys produced an attack immediately and seriously dampened the mood, aside from this flash from the away side though they offered little to deal with in the first half and Liverpool had enough time to regroup after the initial effort from the Swiss side.

Liverpool were pretty creative for the first 45 minutes. Assaidi was looking very conf…

Brendan's Boys In Bonnie Scotland

Image
Hearts are the opposition for Liverpool on Thursday night as they continue their attempts to proceed through the Europa League rounds. The Reds will look for a result to take back to Anfield and with Manchester City looming at the weekend they will surely want to go about this in the easiest way possible.

Injury problems aren't major for both sides but Joe Cole pulled up in the West Brom game and there are also doubts over Jose Enrique for the Reds. For Hearts, striker Zaliukas is a doubt after suffering a knock on the weekend.

The sides haven't met since 1929 and with Liverpool rarely playing Scottish opposition competitively this game is sure to be an interesting one. The short away trip will also help provide an exciting atmosphere in Edinburgh.

Whilst Hearts will have the desire and the ability to field a full strength team, Liverpool will perhaps go into this one feeling a bit like it should be a done deal. The City game on Sunday may encourage Brendan to field players l…

Maxi Nets A Hat Trick In 5-0 Rout

Image
Can't remember what game it was, think it was a terrible footy game on the Gamecube but i finally got to mimic the Japanese sounding commentator... "Joh-Coh-Gohlll!" ...
After recent fixtures against the Midlands side it was looking as though this one could be tough for Liverpool. The refreshing resurgence since the arrival of manager Kenny Dalglish has still seen us falter on a few occasions and Birmingham were ready to try to cause an upset.

An emphatic performance from Liverpool though saw them embarrass Alex McCleish's side in a 5-0 win without Andy Carroll who was in the stands and also minus a goal from Luis Suarez who put in more of an assisting role for a superb 90minutes.

It took just shy of 7 minutes for Liverpool to add a spark to the game. A stinging effort from Jay Spearing was parried away by Ben Foster only to come out into the path of Maxi Rodriguez, the Argentine made no mistakes and sent the ball into the Birmingham net.

Jay Spearing was yet again an…

Incentive For Reds As They Search For 5th Win & 5th Clean Sheet

Image
It will be no surprise if the on fire Raul Meireles scores again tomorrow...
Liverpool are in search of a 5th win on the bounce tomorrow as they welcome Wigan to Anfield. Also on the back of four clean sheets, Dalglish's side will surely be brimming with confidence going into this fixture against a side in 18th place.

With results seeing a major improvement at Liverpool it is very hard to look at this clash and not predict a Liverpool win. With solid defensive displays and clear attacking options, even without using our two new signings, surely 3 points are within our reach tomorrow.

However, it is vital we don't push aside Wigan's valiant efforts in a mad weekend of football last week. A battle with Blackburn saw them eventually take all three points after beating fellow Lancashire neighbours 4-3.

Liverpool have never lost to Wigan at home but despite this strong home record, as recently as March of last season i am sure you will all remember a 1-0 defeat at the hands of W…

Cole Sinks Coyle's Side In Late Win For Liverpool

Image
Cole nets the winner...
Liverpool shockingly managed to kick off 2011 with three points yesterday after a hard fought game against Bolton Wanderers eventually saw the Reds come from behind to beat Owen Coyle's boys.
Whilst the pressure has eased on manager Roy Hodgson according to the press i think it's more realistic to say that whilst most fans were pleased with the improved performance it's safe to say that opinions on who is at the Anfield helm have not changed.
Fair play to Roy on one aspect though after reintroducing Maxi Rodriguez into the side and also on the inclusion of Daniel Agger. It was a risk to start the big Dane but i thought Agger had a fantastic game. Another key point to the starting line up was the missing Steven Gerrard, apparently fatigued after the Wolves match he was left out of the midfield. Reina was in goal as always with Johnson, Skrtel and surprisingly Fabio Aurelio making up the rest of the back four (it was nice to see Aurelio there instead of …

Chelsea Travel To Anfield

Image
Will we see some more of Gerrard's magic today?...
Liverpool welcome the blue of Chelsea to Anfield tomorrow in what will certainly be a massive tie for the boys in Red. On the back of an eventually convincing win over Napoli in which Gerrard played a major part, can Liverpool, with the eyes of everyone just waiting to watch them fail, perform a miracle?
Lets face it, our start to the season needs no explanation, it doesn't back up a plan to do over Chelsea really does it? The only thing we have to go on is that we are on some sort of streak. Blackburn, Bolton and Napoli aren't necessarily a champion of a run but we'll take anything at the moment.
Beating Chelsea has always been hard even at the best of times for Liverpool so at this point it should be even more difficult but as seems to be the case with Liverpool, when the cards are down, sometimes we just pop up and shock the hell out of everybody. Let's hope today it will be one of those cases.
For Chelsea they have…

Cole Gets Ball Rolling In Liverpool Rout

Image
Lucas dedicates his celebration to his unborn child...
It was a rather wet and windy setting for Liverpool's game last night against Steaua Bucharest but who needs sunshine to brighten things up when you have the Reds on superb form?
It was a mixed team fielded by the boss and it was a side missing the likes of Carragher, Gerrard and Torres. Ngog was given another chance up front and the XI also included academy boys Spearing and Kelly who were more than willing to impress Hodgson and the fans.
I was still getting settled and into a comfortable position when Liverpool first decided to raise the eyebrows of everyone watching. After just 30 seconds a very sloppy defensive pass from the Romanians meant Joe Cole could sneakily steal the ball, after making the run his shot wide past the keeper almost seemed as though he had missed the target but his effort found it's way in and Anfield was jumping.
I'm so pleased for the lad, we all know he's not necessarily here for banging lo…

Babel Scores To Secure Liverpool Win

Image
Babel celebrates his first goal of the season with team-mates Joe Cole and Milan Jovanovic...
Last nights Europa League clash for Liverpool was not one of our most memorable European nights at Anfield but a win is a win and the sole goal from Mr.Potential allows Liverpool to go to Turkey with a slim lead over their opposition.
Hodgson opted to rest some players who had featured in the game against Arsenal meaning lads like Glen Johnson and Steven Gerrard sat this one out. Mascherano and Agger were unable to feature through injury and rather surprisingly Alberto Aquilani wasn't even chosen for the bench.
Reports coming out this morning though suggest that he may be subject to a loan move and other reports say that Kuyt could be considering a move to link up with Rafa at Inter Milan... All that is for another post though.
So Liverpool had Reina in goal with Kelly, Carragher, Kyrgiakos and Aurelio making up the back line. Midfield consisted of Jovanovic, Rodriguez, Lucas and Pouslen with…

Joe Cole Sees Red In Draw With Arsenal

Image
Aww... The poor sod! Someone give him a bear hug and a whiskey...
Liverpool came away from Anfield yesterday with a draw, at first glance, a more than respectable result but after the circumstances and sheer madness of the match, the Reds were right to feel hard done by after such a hard fought game.
Roy set up his team with Reina in goal, Skrtel and Carragher in the centre with Agger as left back and Glen on the right. Gerrard sat with surprise inclusion Javier Mascherano in the centre of the park. Jovanovic and Kuyt were the wing men with Cole sitting behind David N'Gog.
For the first 45minutes Liverpool looked steady, fireworks weren't exploding but we were more than holding up against Arsenal i thought. That being said it was clearly dangerous to think Arsenal may not pop up with a flash of brilliance.
Liverpool were eager to get going and keen youngster N'Gog was caught offside on a few occasions in the first half after he set off just that slight bit too early. Persisten…

This Time It's Gunner Be Different

Image
Ohhh shush yerself!...
I don't know about you lot but i don't fancy an early dose of smug mug Arshavin as the starter for my Premier League 5star meal do you?
It's a very strange thing because although Arshavin is clearly a good player he just seems to come alive at our glorious Anfield and i for one am just about sick of it. For Sundays fresh start under Roy Hodgson and with a team that shall have elements of surprise for Arsene Wengers boys, it may not be such a bad result.
A lot of people like myself are probably thinking we're gonna get hammered. At the same time however when you sit back and really have a good old think about things... Why can't we go and get a slim win over Arsenal? We've got some goalscorers, some game changers, we shouldn't have to fear Arsenal surely? A draw is more than feasible but it's the pundit fuelled ruling out of a win for Liverpool that i feel spurs on this negative attitude into the game.
Yes, maybe Arsenal will beat us a…

Borussia Moenchen(not-so-glad-to-be)bach

Cole makes his debut...
Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carraghers return to football for the Reds ended with a loss yesterday after just the one goal split the two teams. Joe Cole was also allowed his debut and Glen Johnson was back too.
Cole had an impressive hour or so for Liverpool, particularly good in his ability to link up with captain Steven Gerrard. Other familiar faces for Liverpool such as Insua were also putting in respectable performances and the start from the Argentine raises new questions over his imminent future.
It took only 8minutes for the Germans to score after an unfortunate defensive error by Liverpool, Matmour was able to score what would be the winner for Borussia. They looked a stable side throughout, perhaps encouraged by some sloppy play by Liverpool after passes weren't always finding their way through but again as with all the pre season matches played, the Reds have nothing to be ashamed about.
With Reina, Kuyt, Torres and the like back in training today, my a…

Joe Cole - Welcome To Anfield

Image
I knew he was pacey but jeez...
Liverpool today confirmed the signing of Joe Cole. Believed to be a four year deal the ex Chelsea player has agreed personal terms and will be having a medical within the next two days or so.
A skillful player and a respected one by many football fans. Personally as somebody who rarely respects/appreciates many footballers from other clubs... Joe Cole has always been a player I have liked, right from his West Ham days, I've watched him mature and improve and I'm delighted he has chosen a move to Anfield.
A minor concern which i can totally understand from some fans though is the fact he is rather injury prone, depending on how much we are forking out for his wages and how well he holds his fitness, of course this could have been a gamble, but in my eyes, a gamble well worth the risk. I just hope it pays off for whoever signed him, was it Roy? Roy had talks... but hang on isn't Purslow controlling transfers these days? Or did he have a day off?
A…
