Aspas Nets First Goal In FA Cup Win

Image
What should have been a straight forward FA Cup tie for Liverpool on Sunday at stages looked tenuous as the Reds struggled to stamp their authority on the game with a weakened XI. A goal from Iago Aspas in the second half settled what could have been a nervy fixture and an own goal from James Tarkowski late on ensured Liverpool's progress to the next round where they will face either Burton Albion or Bournemouth.

Oldham under their young manager Lee Johnson began the game in a very positive fashion, at times it was easy to question which side was the Premier League outfit. Whilst Liverpool could perhaps note the excuse that their side was weakened it wasn't really acceptable, the side on the pitch should have been performing much better.

In the first half for the Reds it was Luis Alberto who had the best of the chances for the home side, one shot taken perfectly, unfortunately flew wide of the post and Liverpool were forced to continue to withstand some Oldham pressure in the…

Hat Trick Of FA Cup Meetings With Oldham

Image
This is the third time Liverpool have been pitted against Oldham in the FA Cup in as many seasons. The Reds will surely look to proceed further in this competition despite having most of their commitment pinned firmly on the league.

It is predicted that Brendan Rodgers will field a very different team for the tie at Anfield on Sunday but with Steven Gerrard recently back fit, he could feature in the starting line up boosting Liverpool's experience.

Injuries for Liverpool mean they are without Daniel Sturridge, Joe Allen and Mamadou Sakho whilst Oldham manager Lee Johnson has a relatively strong squad to choose from. Philliskirk, Dayton and MacDonald are all available after recent knocks.

Recent form for Oldham sees them having won only one of their last six matches and that was an FA Cup tie against Mansfield. League form for Oldham is currently problematic and they are placed 19th in League One on 24 points.

The last time the two sides met was in January last year and it was a p…

League 1 Oldham Knock Out Lacklustre Reds

Image
Liverpool fell to an embarrassing defeat at Boundary Park on Sunday evening as Oldham found an early lead via their influential forward Matt Smith. The Reds found an equaliser shortly afterwards but another Smith goal in the first half left Brendan's boys with a lot of work to do. Wabara's goal in the second half rubbed even more salt into the wounds and despite a stunning Joe Allen strike late on, Liverpool just couldn't find the equaliser that would earn them a replay at Anfield.

Rodgers made some changes to the starting line up which was most notably missing the likes of Pepe Reina, Daniel Agger and Steven Gerrard, although the side was slightly weakened an attack consisting of Raheem Sterling, Fabio Borini, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge meant the Reds were certainly gunning for it.

Paul Dickov set up a strong side to face Liverpool and as mentioned in the preview Wesolowski was made captain in midfield, the boyhood Liverpool fan leading the way in terms of attitude…

Oldham In Fourth Round For Reds

Image
Liverpool make the rather short trip to Boundary Park on Sunday as they prepare to face Oldham Athletic in the fourth round of the FA Cup. After their emphatic win over Norwich last weekend Liverpool are certainly looking like the favourites going into this tie.

Liverpool are still without Pepe Reina who is recovering from a thigh injury and they are also missing Jose Enrique who isn't quite fit enough to start again in defence. For Oldham they are without Dean Furham who is taking part in the Africa Cup Of Nations.

Oldham are currently 19th in League 1 whilst Liverpool are sitting 7th in the Premier League. Of course league positions don't tend to matter in the FA Cup and even less so when you're facing your opposition on their home turf, anything can happen. Oldham's captain James Wesolowski is also apparently a big Liverpool fan and so I'm sure he'd love to lead his side to victory over the mighty Reds.

We don't have to go far back at all to find the la…

Reds Beat Oldham 5-1

Image
Liverpool put five goals past an Oldham side that took the lead at Anfield on Friday night. A very different starting line up for Liverpool allowed Dalglish to try something new and for once Liverpool could be described as clinical rather than wasteful.

Oldham opened the scoring just before the half hour mark with a superb strike from Robbie Simpson. There were no complaints from the Reds for this goal, it flew past Reina with great speed. Cracking goal.

In the build up to Oldham's first goal, the away side were holding themselves well. For a League One side playing at Anfield they had their fair share of possession.

When Liverpool conceded though, the players immediately realised that trouble was on the horizon and thankfully Craig Bellamy quickly equalised to put the Reds straight back in the game.

Just 2 minutes after the Oldham goal and a Jonjo Shelvey strike carried itself into the path of Craig Bellamy who stuck his head on the end of it to ensure a goal. Bellamy once again…

Oldham Make Short Trip To Merseyside

Image
Ahh, the magic of the FA Cup. 6 years now since the last time we got our hands on it, feels longer doesn't it? Well Liverpool have Oldham standing in their way at the moment and if they have any aspirations of reaching the final, they will need to deal with Paul Dickov's side first.

For readers outside the UK, Oldham Athletic are a long-standing football club within the English Leagues. They are based in Greater Manchester and are currently in League One.

Oldham's manager Paul Dickov has been encouraging his side to play with freedom on Friday night and why not? If you're coming to Anfield as underdogs, the best thing to do it go for it. Oldham don't have any real injury worries so the manager will have plenty of choice for his starting XI.

For Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish he of course still has the missing Lucas Leiva and now Luis Suarez out serving his 8 match ban. It will be interesting to see whether Dalglish makes full use of this fixture to bring Gerrard…
