Games Gone By: Manchester United 1 Liverpool 4

Image
It was a bright March morning two years ago when Liverpool fans were rising and preparing for the massive game against Manchester United. The trip to Old Trafford, the pub or even to the armchair is sometimes a nervy experience before games like this but the excitement and adrenaline always prevail.

My morning back in March 2009 consisted of me getting ready for work and having to pull myself away from the television and the ramblings of the sexist dinosaur, ahem I mean Richard Keys.

The games preceding the Manchester United fixture in March saw Liverpool beat Sunderland 2-0 and lose to Middlesborough by the same scoreline. But a brilliant 4-0 win over Real Madrid just four days earlier helped the Reds' confidence levels.

A season in which Rafael Benitez had helped fuel a title challenge meant the Manchester United result mattered more than it had done for a long while.

After the regular build up and mind games from the Manchester United camp, Liverpool quietly kept themselves t…

Can Reina keep his 6th clean sheet of the competition?...
Liverpool welcome Napoli to Anfield tomorrow for another Europa League tie. The match sharing a special day tomorrow as yours truly will be turning 21! So here's hoping my birthday gift from Liverpool is a nice secure win.
After Roy's boys picked up three points with a late winner against Bolton on the weekend and before that managed to beat Big Sam's Blackburn surely the newly instilled winning mentality can be rubbed off in the competition we are still unbeaten in.
The tie in Napoli was somewhat disappointing but with no Gerrard or Torres we did well to keep a clean sheet and come away with a respectable 0-0 draw.
Jonjo Shelvey was a surprise inclusion in the last meeting and had a superb game. Whether Roy this time out will opt for a changed side what with the Chelsea game on the weekend i do not know but if he does choose to field a less familiar side i'd certainly welcome the likes of Shelvey and Kelly again.

No Goals In Naples

Nervous moment for the Reds as Konchesky prepares to clear off the line...
A different looking Liverpool side last night boded well against Serie A side Napoli in their third group game of the Europa League. Despite a lack of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, a good performance, namely from the youngsters meant Liverpool managed to gain a respectable draw at the Stadio San Paolo.
The side fielded by Roy contained the likes of Martin Kelly, Jay Spearing and Jonjo Shelvey, just three of the players on the pitch out to prove themselves. Pepe Reina started in goal with Skrtel, Carragher and Konchesky making up the rest of the back four. Poulsen was in midfield with Jovanovic and Babel on the wings and David Ngog up front.
Napoli perhaps got the better of the starts from the two sides and were creative down the wings. Old friend Dossena was using his already imprinted knowledge of some of the lads in Red to his advantage and the Italians had a few early chances.
Despite this, a solid defence…

Napoli's pitch was apparently vandalised this week but is said to be in ship shape now for tomorrow's game...
Liverpool travel to Italy tomorrow for a clash in Naples with Serie A side Napoli and as the title suggests, they will be in need of some "good luck". The third tie from our Europa League group somehow seems a world away from our problems within the Premier League. With no losses recorded at all so far for us in the competition, just 2 goals conceded and a return of 11 scored, things couldn't be in more of a contrast at the moment for the Reds in and out of Europe.
Liverpool will be without the injured Glen Johnson and Dirk Kuyt. Also unavailable through sickness is Daniel Agger (Really beginning to worry about Agger, reports from Denmark recently claiming he may be forced to give up football due to his constant back problems and now him missing a game through sickness, it just doesn't seem right. Wish him a quick recovery.) who did not travel with the …

Bad Weather, Transfers And Abusive Emails

Not three components you often expect to see in the title of a blog post but yes, they are the three most topical things surrounding Liverpool at the moment. After being unable to do my match preview yesterday due to our Tottenham fixture being postponed i thought i should fill the gap with a post about general goings on.
So like i just mentioned snow has caused havoc for the majority of Premier League clubs this weekend with only two games being played yesterday and none at all today. Liverpool filed for the option to postpone today's game on Friday after it was deemed that the areas surrounding the ground were simply too treacherous and rightly so, the safety of fans was put first.
With the lads due to face Reading on Wednesday for the second leg of the FA Cup tie it is quite possible that this fixture will be called off too. Reading themselves were also subject to postponing their own game yesterday against Newcastle and with this bad weather not looking to let up for a while th…

Bad Performance, Bad Result And A Bad Reaction From Some Fans

Image
I'm afraid this match report is going to probably appear very negative and low, even being one of the most optimistic fans myself, i struggled dearly to find any real positives from Saturday's clash at Fratton Park. It was quite possibly the worst i have ever seen us play but despite this, i still refuse to jump on a band wagon filled with mostly a deluded fan who is following other peoples train of thought just because at the time, it seemed correct.

We all know the situation with Benitez and we all know as fans that there will always be a difference of opinion but time after time after time there is ALWAYS a select few who bash the manager after a poor result, no real reason or points, they just cause a knee jerk reaction, this then snowballs and many fans who do not take time to think are switched inadvertently to the "Rafa out" way of thinking.

Now don't get me wrong, i have no problem with a fan that can wholeheartedly explain in a calm manner why they do not …
