Liverpool V Sevilla [PREVIEW]

Image
Liverpool enter the Champions League group stages on Wednesday evening for the first time since 2014. The Reds' three year absence has felt like a lifetime to most fans and after a favourable draw in the group, all eyes are on Jurgen Klopp's side to open up our European season in a winning fashion.

Liverpool are no strangers to Sevilla having faced them extremely recently in the 2015/2016 Europa League final. This is however the only time that the two sides have met. Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring on the night but the Reds ended up losing the game 3-1.

Team news for Liverpool means that Philippe Coutinho could feature for the first time since the whole Barcelona saga unfolded. I for one can't be arsed with holding a grudge, I'm perfectly happy for him to feature in the side, frankly it would be a waste not to use such a talent. Hopefully if he does start he can find the back of the net.

Thankfully for the Reds Sadio Mane will also be available, his red card picked up…

The Case of Karius

Image
So unless you've been living under a rock these past few days you will have noticed the waves of criticism coming from all angles for Loris Karius. Including hilariously from the Neville brothers but Klopp shut them down so it's all good.  I think we can all agree after looking back at recent matches. Particularly the Bournemouth game, Karius cannot escape some of the criticism. I don't think anybody is willing to make excuses however is it the right level of criticism or is this pundits and fans alike picking on an easy target?

PROS1. Youth
At 23 years old Karius is one of the youngest goalkeepers in the league. While a young goalkeeper can often be described as inexperienced and rightly so, is it not also true to say that at this young age he is still able to adapt and learn from his mistakes more quickly?
2. Confidence
Not so much when he's coming out for corners at the moment but more so in response to the situation he is in. His put down to Gary Neville the other …

Five Things We Learned From The 0-0 With United

Image
1. Mourinho loves his bus
Mourinho instructed his team to strangle the life out of a football match on Monday night, it's a simple as that. Frustratingly, his plan once again worked perfectly. As a fan of Italian football I am happy to stand back and appreciate a good defensive performance, however I can't accept it when it's from a Jose Mourinho side.
If Tony Pulis set up like that against his United boys he'd be in the post match interview complaining of 19th century tactics and "anti-football". If United are happy playing like that then that's their prerogative but I certainly wouldn't be happy with it. I suppose in a way we must take a positive from this tactical set up, the fact that Mourinho has to resort to this now to try and get the better of Liverpool shows how much of a threat we are.
He can keep his bus for all I care, I can't see it getting him far this season.
2. Karius not that convincing
I discussed in a recent match round up post here …

Five Things We Learned From The Swansea Game

Image
1) The grey area between a penalty or simulation The decision to give Daniel Sturridge a yellow card for simulation was an absolute joke in my opinion. After logging on to Twitter at half time it appears some people felt he got what he deserved. For me, he was clearly impeded via the action of a push and while this action obviously didn't warrant a penalty it isn't to say the alternative was to book him for simulation.

It seems at the moment within the penalty box there is no option for the referee to just continue play when something like that happens, either he has to award a penalty or he has to punish the player, despite the fact they clearly didn't dive.
2) James Milner = vital His penalty kick that followed up Roberto Firmino's earlier goal was obviously pivotal but Milner's whole game in general is something to praise at the moment. I still feel as though he's being caught off guard defensively on the odd occasion but then it's not his natural posit…

Liverpool: Conte's Toughest Test Yet?

Image
Antonio Conte isn't the type of manager to shy away from a fight and looking back at Chelsea's run of fixtures it looks as though Liverpool are going to be the first real test for the Italian. Up to yet Chelsea have faced West Ham, Watford, Bristol Rovers, Burnley and Swansea.

Conte has steered his side to four wins in the process and one draw in their most recent game against Swansea which ended 2-2. Despite hailing from a country renowned for its defensive capabilities (put on show during his time as Azzurri boss) Conte has been unable to shaw things up at the back with Chelsea only managing to keep one clean sheet so far this season (Burnley 3-0).

Conte may have the answer to some of his back four issues though as he announced in Thursday's presser that David Luiz would be brought in for Friday night's game. Most on Twitter however laughed at the fact the man Chelsea sold and then bought back from PSG is supposed to be the remedy.

It's no secret that I'm eve…

Transfer Round Up

Image
The transfer window certainly hasn't slammed shut just yet but Liverpool have already secured a bit of business with the main transaction being the extension of Jurgen Klopp's stay at Anfield. No complaints here.
The Reds first real signing I suppose was Joel Matip who had already agreed pre-conditions with the Reds and had to wait until the summer in order for all the i's to be dotted and t's to be crossed. I must confess I don't know a hell of a lot about Matip but from what I have seen/read he seems like a great fit for the back line. At 24 he's certainly one for the future and I'm always a sucker for a goalscoring defender!
"I am certain that this is the right moment for me to take the next step in my career." - Joel Matip
Next up is Loris Karius the German goalkeeper, according to several fans and pundits Loris could even feature ahead of Simon Mignolet come season start. Purchased as competition, he may be favoured by Jurgen Klopp who has adm…
